FDLE investigating after man dies from Taser shot
OCOEE, Fla. (FOX 35 ORLANDO) - Homeowners in a quiet upscale Ocoee neighborhood are trying to figure out how, and why, their neighbor died.
Ocoee Police said they responded to a disturbance call at a home on Calliope Street around 11:15 Thursday night. Windemere Police provided back-up assistance.
The situation escalated, according to Ocoee police officers, forcing them to use their Tasers on 32-year-old Jean Samuel Celestin. After the incident, police said “the subject’s condition deteriorated and officers had to initiate life-saving measures.” Firefights rushed Celestin to the hospital, but he didn’t make it.
The Florida Deparment of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is now investigating, since Celestin died in police custody.
“We have not gotten a medical examiner’s report back yet, so I can’t directly attribute it to the Electronic Control Weapon that was deployed," said FDLE Special Agent Lee Massie. "I can’t tell you what the exact cause of death was at this point.”
So far, six responding officers have been interviewed about the situation, including one who was injured.
“Knees, maybe some road rash,” Massie explained.
FDLE is also looking at officers’ body camera video. Right now, it remains unclear how many times Celestin was tased with the electronic control weapon.
“There were indications of these probes beginning in the torso area, but I don’t have exact locations at this time,” said Massie.
