A man faces a long list of charges after a high-speed chase involving a stolen car ended with a crash in Lakeland, causing multiple injuries, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The pursuit and crash

Shortly before 3 p.m. Thursday, a trooper spotted a black Camaro which matched the description of a car that had recently sped away from Auburndale police, speeding along Memorial Blvd.

The trooper got behind the car in a left turn lane and tried to pull over the driver, later identified as Jaaziel Calero Nuez, 22, but FHP said he sped off.

FHP said the suspect ran a red light at the intersection of George Jenkins Blvd. and Kathleen Rd., hitting an SUV and a sedan.

Investigators said both people inside the SUV had to be removed by rescuers before going to the hospital with injuries.

Suspect tased and arrested

According to the arrest affidavit, a trooper spotted Calero Nuez reaching toward the passenger floorboard of the Camaro moments after the crash, leading the trooper to pull the suspect out of the car.

Calero Nuez resisted, investigators said, until a Lakeland police officer tased him and he was taken into custody.

Items found after the arrest

Troopers said a gun was later found in the floorboard where Calero Nuez was reaching just before his arrest. There was no magazine inside.

FHP said a search of the suspect and the stolen car also turned up the following items:

  • A stack of cash in the suspect's pocket
  • Two Glock magazines with ammunition
  • A Micro Drako magazine with .762 caliber ammunition
  • Programmable key and a professional key programmer
  • A Florida license plate in the trunk (a Georgia tag was on the back of the car at the time)

Suspect's history and charges

He went to the hospital after his arrest and will be taken to jail on the following charges:

  • Aggravated fleeing causing death or serious bodily injury
  • Possession of marijuana (more than 20 grams)
  • Possession of marijuana with intent to sell
