DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Daytona Beach police officers are looking for the person who shot up a home Wednesday night, while a woman and eight children were inside the house. Bullets even flew into a room where an eight-month-old was sleeping.
“I just hear, 'Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop!' I'm thinking it's fireworks,” explained Roneishia Byrd.
But it wasn’t fireworks. Seven shots were fired into Byrd’s home with her 13-year-old daughter and seven nieces and nephews inside. Jay-Ona Owens and her eight-month-old cousin were in a bedroom together when the bullets flew in.
“At that point, I didn't think about myself. I was just thinking about the babies and the little one that was in the room with me,” said Owens. “They touched my braids, so close. I felt it on my braid.”
Her room is now decorated with bullet holes and broken blinds. According to the family and the police report, a boy threatened to shoot up the house over an incident involving a stolen car.
“Earlier that day, he kept coming around the apt and just sitting out here,” said Byrd.
Now police are looking for the suspect. Roneishia and her family are still on edge, wondering how they’re going to sleep in the home or continue to live there at all.
“I'm just thankful that none of them got hurt. I know my baby could have been gone today. My nephew could have been gone today. If I had to bury my baby, there's nothing nobody could have told me.
Daytona Beach Police are now looking for a black juvenile between 5 feet, 7 inches and 5 feet, 9 inches tall with black hair, brown eyes and a beard.
If you know who he is, call Daytona Beach Police.
