Daytona Beach family escape house fire
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - A family of seven was forced to run for their lives after flames erupted in their home.
All of them were sleeping as the fire spread. Fortunately, everyone including a paralyzed woman on the second floor made it out, but the same can’t be said for some of their pets.
“By the time we got to the front door, there was no going back in,” Ed Franklin said. “There was nothing we could do.”
His stepdaughter Kai Patterson is paralyzed from the waist down and was asleep on the second floor. She said she is lucky to be alive.
“It was one of the scariest things in my entire life,” Patterson said. “I have never ever been in a fire. And I burnt my lips because of how hot it was. I was going down the stairs with my boyfriend – he was carrying me because I am paralyzed and if it wasn’t for him I probably would still be in my bed right now.”
Sadly two family pets didn’t make it - a bird and a dog named Lilly.
“They were doing CPR on the dogs,” Patterson said. “They were giving the dogs oxygen. The fire department went above and beyond.”
As they grieve their losses, they’re left to figure out what to do next.
“Right now we have no idea,” Patterson said.
Starting over from scratch and looking for a hotel room after living in this home for 13 years.
The Fire Marshall said the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but add that they don’t think it was suspicious.
