Crash caused by fleeing suspect, police say
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (FOX 35 WOFL) - A Daytona Beach man was arrested for eluding police during a traffic stop, then totaling another car.
The crash happened on Nova Road and 6th Street, early Monday morning. According to Daytona Beach Police, Paul Kelly, 27, was seen making an illegal U-turn, before officers activated their sirens to perform a traffic stop.
Police said the car fled north bound, and the officer terminated the traffic stop. The car continued going and went through the red light at 6th Street and Nova, and T-boned a car going east, according to police.
The driver and passenger in the other car suffered bad injuries. The passenger was rushed to the hospital with broken ribs and a punctured lung, while the driver suffered torn muscles in his knee and chest.
“It’s a second change pretty much, because I could’ve died,” said driver Dakota Cousimano. “Last night is still replaying over and over in my head.”
Kelly was also taken to the hospital with a head laceration, where he was in the custody of officers. Police found marijuana, plastic baggies, and scales in Kelly’s car upon search. He was charged with possession with intent to sell, and eluding police.
