Colonial Drive closed after SunRail train collides with vehicle

Colonial Drive was closed in Downtown Orlando just before the Wednesday rush hour, after a SunRail train collided with a vehicle, authorities said.

The crash shut down both directions of the roadway around 4:30 p.m., while police investigated.  It also prompted delays for northbound and southbound trains, due to a police presence near the tracks.

"It involved train P327, which is a southbound SunRail train," explained Florida Department of Transportation spokesman Steve Olson. "A vehicle, reportedly in the grade crossing/railroad crossing, was struck. A person inside that vehicle was injured."

Olson said there were two crew members and 82 passengers were on board the train.  The driver was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center in serious condition.

Colonial Drive was blocked in both directions, just east of Interstate 4 just over an hour.  All trains were back on the move by 5:45 p.m. The incident caused delays to the system, with three southbound and three northbound trains delayed.

SunRail was working to recover the schedule, Olson added.
