Carnival cruise ship stuck at port finally sets sail hours later

The Carnival Freedom cruise ship remained at Port Canaveral in Florida instead of heading out to sea on Thursday evening after being delayed due to an "environmental" issue, officials said. It finally set sail several hours later.

Vacationers aboard the Carnival Freedom cruise ship that expected to depart from Port Canaveral, Florida on Thursday afternoon ended up staying in the Sunshine State a few hours longer due to an environmental issue. What happened?

The FOX 35 News team reached out to the cruise line on Thursday night for more details on the delay and received the following statement:

What Happened:

The ship was originally scheduled for departure at 3:30 p.m., however an oily sheen had appeared around the ship which prompted an investigation.

On Saturday, authorities at Carnival shared an updated statement: 

The oil was cleaned up and a thorough investigation of the ship was done which showed the oil was not coming from the vessel.

The ship set sail for the Bahamas later that night.
