Boy knocked off surfboard by shark at New Smyrna Beach
NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. - A 7-year-old boy who had a close encounter with a shark now has quite the story to tell.
The incident happened on Saturday in New Smyrna Beach.
Chandler Moore was out on the water with his dad, Shaun Moore, when what he thought was a fish knocked him off his surfboard.
“It kind of knocked the board and like made me fall off,” Chandler said. “I was just assuming that was a fish.”
However, upon reviewing GoPro footage of the surf session, surfers on Twitter were quick to point out that the “fish” was actually a small blacktip shark.
Shaun slowed down the video and took a screengrab of exactly when the shark hit the board.
“He almost got bit by a shark out on the water, so it’s a little surreal,” Shaun said.
Shaun says Chandler has been surfing since he was 4 years old and is very cautious.
He knows sharks are common on New Smyrna Beach, but the incident was still somewhat of a shock.
“It was the craziest thing ever!” Chandler said.
The 7-year-old says he’s not scared.
He will continue to surf.
“I am definitely going to be out on the water,” Chandler said.
