INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Volusia County Sheriff’s Office detectives, along with the assistance from the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, made an arrest on Tuesday in an nine-year-old sexual assault cold case.
The alleged assault of a 47-year-old woman is said to have happened in early morning of Sept. 14, 2008, in Ormond Beach, in sand dunes along State Road A1A. The victim later submitted to a forensic exam and the physical evidence was stored in the Sheriff’s Office evidence unit.
All leads were exhausted and the case turned cold; however, in last two years, DNA testing led deputies to Adam Gregory Shuman, 41, of Vero Beach.
“This wouldn’t have been possible without the state funding from the Attorney General’s Office to help ease the backlog of sexual assault cases,” Sheriff Mike Chitwood said.
Shuman is being held on a sexual assault charge at the Indian River County jail. His bail is set at $50,000.
