ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - There’s a new plan to spend another $60 million on upgrades at Camping World Stadium.
It was just four years ago that renovations made Camping World Stadium what it is now. But those who did the work say it still hasn’t reached its full potential, and they want to change that.
It’s the stadium that’s become known for college football games, some NFL games, massive concerts and special events, including Wrestlemania. But after more than $200 million worth of renovations, Florida Citrus Sports now wants to put more money into the venue.
“That stadiums' going to be here for a long time. the team's aren't going anywhere, so they may as well make it nice,” said Nicholas Brewer, of Orlando.
The plan includes upgrades to bathrooms and concessions, adding permanent seating, connecting various stadium sections, expanding certain areas to improve flow around the stadium and increasing views from any part of the stadium.
“There's definitely areas where you want to stand, and then it's hurry up and wait because you got to peak around the corner and watch the game while you're still trying to be in line,” said Brewer.
“If you can create a flow where I can see the field the whole time I'm walking -- I would love -- anybody that's a football or fan anything that's there would love that,” said David Hargrove, of Mims.
So why were there four years in between renovations? Florida Citrus Sports says it didn’t get as much money for renovations as they requested in 2006. Then the recession halted the plan. Now with the stadium’s success and strong tourist development tax revenue, they want to finish the job.
The Tourist Development Council approved the plan Friday morning. Orange County commissioners will vote on it next month.
