6-year-old in critical condition after accidental head gunshot wound in Lakeland

A 6-year-old boy is in critical condition after sustaining a gunshot wound to the head in what investigators believe was an accidental, self-inflicted shooting.

The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon in a vehicle parked at a residence in the 200 block of Crawford Street, according to the Lakeland Police Department.

Officers responded to the scene at approximately 3:44 p.m. but learned that the child had already been transported to Lakeland Regional Health by a personal vehicle before their arrival.

Detectives launched an investigation and determined that the firearm was accessible to the child inside the vehicle, leading to the accidental discharge.

The child remains hospitalized in critical condition.

No charges have been filed at this time, but the investigation is ongoing.
