2 struck by vehicle in Merritt Island

MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. (WOFL FOX - Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol say two boys were transported by helicopter to a hospital after being struck by a vehicle in Merritt Island.  It happened just after 4 p.m. at Courtenay Parkway and Grove Blvd., near Merritt Island High School. 

Investigators said the victims, 15-year-old twin brothers, had just left the high school and were on two different bicycles when they were struck by a passenger truck.  A witness said the boys were crossing Courtenay Parkway and were believed to have been inside the crosswalk at the time.  Both were wearing helmets, troopers said.

Both bikes became wedged under the Chevrolet Silverado and debris could be seen strewn across the roadway, some 30 feet away from the point of impact.   The driver, Michelle White, of Merritt Island, remained at the scene and has been cooperating with the investigation. 

"I just hope they're ok. I"m just praying they're ok," White said. "I'm just so sorry and still a little shaken up ... it's just one of those awful, awful accidents that happen."

Authorities first told FOX 35 that one of the brothers was transported to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando, possibly with a broken leg, and the other brother was alert and taken to Holmes Medical Center in Melbourne.  They have since corrected that statement to say that both boys were taken to Orlando, where they were in stable condition.
