2 injured in small plane crash near Port Orange

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office say two occupants of a small airplane were injured on Thursday  afternoon when their plane crashed at Spruce Creek Fly-In in the Port Orange area.

Deputies responded to the crash around 1:45 p.m. on Cessna Boulevard.  A 911 caller told dispatchers the plane, a single-engine aircraft, had crashed in the area of the runway and had burst into flames. He said witnesses were working to pull the occupants out of the plane.

The pilot has been identified as John Wilson, 61, of Port Orange.  Wilson was transported by helicopter to Orlando Regional Medical Center with critical injuries. The passenger, Matthew Simmons, 35, of Port Orange, was taken by ambulance to Halifax Health Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Officials with the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration were notified of the crash, the Sheriff's Office said.
