DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - An "on-track incident" at Daytona International Speedway left one driver dead and another driver hurt, according to a statement from the racetrack.
In a statement on Saturday, Daytona International Speedway confirmed that a driver was transported to a nearby medical facility "following on on-track incident during today's Audi Club track rental session."
"Additionally, our thoughts are with the driver who was injured during the same incident. Daytona International Speedway will coordinate with both Audi Club and local authorities during their investigation into the cause of the accident."
Specifics on what happened, how the driver was killed, how the other driver was injured and the extent of his or her injuries were not immediately released.
Daytona Beach Police told FOX 35 on Monday that it had not yet completed is report regarding the deadly crash.
On Monday, Audi Club North America said in a statement that the event was not an Audi Club event, but an International GT practice session. It added that it was "saddened" to learn about the driver's death.
In a statement, International GT confirmed that one of its drivers was killed and that another driver was hurt.
"We confirm the death of a driver who was transported to a local hospital after an incident during International GT’s practice session at Daytona International Speedway. A second driver involved in the incident was also transported to a local hospital. Our deepest sympathies go to the family of the driver who has passed. We would like to give our well wishes to the second driver during their recovery," the statement read.
No other details were released.
