1 dead, 4 hurt, including 3 kids, after possible electric shock at fountain in Florida, police say

One person has died, and four others were hurt, including three children, after possibly being electrocuted or shocked while playing in a fountain at a shopping center in Florida, officials said.

The incident happened Sunday afternoon at Harborside Place in Jupiter, Florida, according to the Jupiter Police Department and Palm Beach County Fire Rescue. Jupiter is a little more than two hours southeast of Orlando, and north of West Palm Beach.

Paramedics initially responded to the area for a reported drowning after a child was experiencing distress while in the fountain, according to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue. Paramedics then found "several patients" who needed to be looked at for possible injuries.

Two adults and three children were transported to nearby hospitals and trauma centers, officials said. One adult died at the hospital, police said. The other adult was treated and released. The three children were recovering at the hospital, according to police.

Three others were evaluated at the scene and ultimately not transported, paramedics said.

"This is currently an active investigation and Jupiter Police Department Detectives are working with the Town of Jupiter Building Department, Harbourside Place, and Florida Power & Light (FPL) personnel during this investigation," Jupiter police said Monday in a statement, referring to it was an "electrocution incident."

A possible cause for the electric shocks was not immediately known.

"We are aware of a serious incident that happened in Jupiter late Sunday afternoon. Our crews responded quickly to ensure the site was safe for first responders to access the area. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those involved. For more information, please contact the Jupiter Police Department," Florida Power & Light said in a statement.
