A disturbance brewing in the Atlantic has a 100% chance of developing into a tropical depression or tropical storm, the National Hurricane Center said Monday afternoon.
The next name on the docket for the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season is Lee.
Most models indicate the tropical wave, known as Invest 95L, located off the African coast may become a threat to the Caribbean by this coming weekend, said FOX 35 Storm Team Chief Meteorologist Jayme King.
The wave has a 90% chance of developing within the next 48 hours and a 100% chance of developing over the next seven days, the NHC said.
The storm is expected to become a tropical depression or tropical storm in a day or two, plus additional strengthening late this week.
The storm is currently located about 700 miles west-southwest of the Cape Verde Islands and is expected to move toward the west or west-northwest at 15-20 mph over the central and western portions of the tropical Atlantic.
"As we look at the Caribbean islands, certainly watching closely there for any type of advisories that could come down as we start to see the makings of what looks to be Tropical Storm Lee and eventually Hurricane Lee, our next storm on the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season name list," King said.
Will the tropical disturbance impact Florida?
For now, King said it is too early to speculate where it may end up, but it is certainly something worth monitoring through next week.
